REDYSIGN is a European project, funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), focused on developing resource-efficient processes for the production and circularization of bio-based, recyclable, and smart fibre-based packaging (FBP) as an alternative to current non-circular multi-plastic solutions for fresh meat distribution. The project aims to create a fully bio-based, smart, and recyclable fresh meat packaging solution, in which every intermediate product—tray, barrier coating, absorbent pad, and transparent film—will be made almost entirely from wood-based materials (macro-, micro-, and nanofibres, lignin, and sugars). The new packaging will integrate two sensors to prevent food spoilage (one to detect early rotting and another to monitor breaks in the cold chain), as well as an identification marker to improve sorting and thereby enhance recycling efficiency. To achieve this, a multidisciplinary consortium of 13 partners from 7 European countries brings together leading companies and research institutes from the European bio-based sector.
